La biografia di uno dei più grandi guerrieri di sempre arriva nelle sale cinematografiche grazie alla regia di Sergei Bodrov, già premiato con l’Oscar europeo per la sceneggiatura de Il prigioniero del Caucaso, e candidato agli Oscar per Miglior film straniero con il nuovo Mongol.
Gengis Khan (1162-1227) è un personaggio dalla storia affascinante: orfano, schiavo e successivamente imprigionato dai cinesi, il “Grande Khan” riuscirà nonostante le molte difficoltà ad unificare le tribù mongole e a dominare la Russia per circa 200 anni. Il film tuttavia non arriva a raccontare la vera e propria glorificazione di Temugin (vero nome di Gengis Khan): nelle due ore di pellicola, Bodrov vuole fare luce sull’uomo più che sul mito già molto conosciuto e per farlo si è servito anche di testi antichi come il poema La storia segreta dei mongoli. Questo non esclude però la presenza di immagini spettacolari e battaglie degne di uno dei personaggi storici più importanti. Oltre alla candidatura, Mongol ha già ricevuto numerosi e importanti premi in patria.
